What to Do When You’re Overcome by Fear

Last weekend I got an email from a client I hadn’t seen in a while. “I’m so scared,” she said. “I think my boyfriend’s been cheating on me. A few days later I heard from another client who was feeling horribly anxious “Over nothing” she said. She couldn’t figure out why she was feeling so frightened. I heard her kids fighting in the background.

“Join the crowd,” I told her. Anxiety and depression are becoming another epidemic, I reminded her about the power of deep breathing.

For 14 months we’ve been living with the taste of illness and death mounting and for many, the world has turned upside down. And no matter what we hear and read about the pandemic one day, the next there's a whole new story.

We, humans, like to know what's going to happen in our lives. We like to know what’s going to happen today, tomorrow, and the day after that. We even like to think we have a reasonably accurate picture of what we can expect our lives to be like next year.

This past year — instead of things feeling familiar and predictable, we were facing the unknown, every day. How many hospital beds are filled in your community? How many empty beds are waiting to be claimed by someone…
